Health Insurance Benefits in Nepal: A Step Towards Better Healthcare for All

Healthcare is a basic human right, yet in Nepal, many people still face challenges accessing quality medical services due to high costs. In recent years, the Government of Nepal has made notable progress in promoting health insurance schemes to ensure that no citizen is left behind when it comes to healthcare. In this blog, we’ll explore the key benefits of health insurance in Nepal and why it's becoming increasingly essential.

1. Financial Protection from Medical Expenses

In Nepal, unexpected illnesses or accidents can create a huge financial burden, especially for low-income families. Health insurance helps cover hospital bills, surgeries, and medication costs, reducing the risk of falling into poverty due to health issues.

According to the Health Insurance Board of Nepal, over 1.2 million people are already enrolled in the national health insurance scheme as of 2023. Source: hib.gov.np

2. Affordable Access to Quality Healthcare

With a yearly premium of around NPR 3,500 per family (up to 5 members), the national health insurance plan covers up to NPR 100,000 in medical treatment. This makes quality healthcare more accessible, even in rural areas.

Additional coverage is available for more than 5 members, with NPR 700 per extra person.

3. Encouragement of Preventive Healthcare

Many Nepalis tend to avoid visiting hospitals until illnesses become severe due to cost concerns. With insurance, families are more likely to seek early treatment and preventive checkups, leading to healthier communities and less pressure on emergency services.

4. Wide Network of Hospitals

The national health insurance scheme in Nepal includes a growing list of public and private hospitals across all 77 districts. This ensures that people can receive treatment close to home, without traveling long distances.

5. Covers Chronic and Emergency Conditions

The scheme covers major diseases like heart conditions, diabetes, kidney diseases, and emergency services, which would otherwise cost thousands of rupees. This is especially helpful for the elderly and people with long-term health issues.

6. Empowers Marginalized and Vulnerable Groups

The government offers free health insurance premiums for people living below the poverty line, senior citizens, people with disabilities, and single women. This inclusiveness strengthens Nepal’s push towards universal health coverage (UHC).

7. Peace of Mind for Families

Having health insurance means you don’t have to delay treatment due to financial worries. For families, especially in uncertain times like pandemics or disasters, this can be life-saving.

Conclusion

Nepal’s health insurance system is still developing, but it holds great promise. As more people enroll and the system improves, it can drastically reduce the health and financial inequalities across the country. If you haven’t joined yet, now is the time to explore health insurance options for yourself and your family.

OSM Plugin in QGIS

How to Extract Standard Maps from OpenStreetMap (OSM) Using QuickOSM Plugin in QGIS

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a valuable resource for accessing and visualizing geographic data contributed by a global community of mappers. QGIS, a powerful open-source Geographic Information System (GIS), offers plugins like QuickOSM to efficiently extract and work with OSM data. In this guide, we'll explore how to use the QuickOSM plugin in QGIS to extract standard maps from OSM.

Introduction to QuickOSM Plugin

The QuickOSM plugin in QGIS simplifies the process of querying and retrieving OSM data directly within your QGIS project. It allows users to specify specific features (such as roads, buildings, land use) and areas of interest, making it ideal for quickly extracting map data for analysis and visualization.

Steps to Extract Standard Maps Using QuickOSM Plugin:

1. **Install the QuickOSM Plugin:**

   - If you haven't installed QuickOSM yet, you can do so via the QGIS Plugin Manager. Navigate to Plugins > Manage and Install Plugins, search for "QuickOSM," and click Install.

2. **Access QuickOSM Panel:**

   - Once installed, you can access QuickOSM from the Web menu or Vector menu in QGIS. Go to Web > QuickOSM > QuickOSM.

now you are ready to work on extraction specific area of land from quick osm plugin . You can also find it in vector menu.

3. **Define Query Parameters:**

   - In the QuickOSM panel, define your query parameters:

     - **Key and Value:** Select the type of feature you want to extract (e.g., highway, building, landuse).

     - **Area of Interest:** Choose your area of interest by typing a place name, using coordinates, or drawing a bounding box on the map.

     - **Output Format:** Specify how you want the data to be returned (e.g., as points, lines, polygons).

4. **Run Query:**

After setting up your query, click on the "Run" button. QuickOSM will send the request to the OSM database and retrieve the data according to your specifications.

5. **Load and Visualize Data:**

   - Once the data is retrieved, it will be added as a new layer in your QGIS project. You can visualize the data on the map canvas and adjust symbology, labels, and styling as needed.

6. **Export or Print Your Map:**

   - Export your map as an image file (e.g., PNG, JPEG) or print it directly from QGIS for use in reports, presentations, or further analysis.

#### Tips for Working with QuickOSM:

- **Query Optimization:** Refine your queries to include only necessary features and areas of interest to optimize data retrieval.

- **Data Attribution:** Provide proper attribution to OpenStreetMap contributors when using OSM data in your projects.

- **Updating Data:** OSM data is regularly updated by contributors worldwide. Periodically refresh your data to ensure you have the latest information.

Conclusion:

The QuickOSM plugin in QGIS offers a convenient and efficient way to access and utilize OpenStreetMap data for creating standard maps. Whether you're mapping urban infrastructure, analyzing transportation networks, or studying environmental features, QGIS and QuickOSM provide powerful tools for geospatial analysis and visualization.
